Kiefer Sutherland starrer “Mirrors,” from Los Angeles-based Gallic helmer Alexandre Aja, will open Spain’s Sitges Film Festival of Catalonia, Europe’s biggest genre pic event.
Fox releases the film in the U.S. today. Friday
A loose remake of Korean film “Into the Mirror,” pic concerns a Gotham cop-turned-security guard battling sinister forces that endanger him and his family. It was produced by Arnon Milchan’s New Regency and distribbed by Fox. Paula Patton and Amy Smart also star.
Aja is one of the few Gallic filmmakers who’s made the transfer to Hollywood. He helmed Wes Craven remake “The Hills Have Eyes” and is attached to a Weinstein Co. remake, “Piranha 3-D.”
Aja’s a Sitges fave – his sophomore pic, “Haute Tension” (“Switchblade Romance”), won director kudos in 2003 and helped establish France’s fame for cerebral femme-focused slasher films. Fest runs Oct. 2-12.
