A screaming soiree in L.A.

Spike TV's Scream Awards kick off

HOLLYWOOD — Saturday’s Spike TV Scream Awards proved that sci-fi, horror, fantasy and comic genres are alive and well in Hollywood.

George Lucas accepted his lifetime achievement award surrounded by a battalion of clone troopers, noting, “There’s a lot more to these genres than people give them credit for.”

Honoree Tim Burton picked up his kudo after arriving onstage via a hot-air balloon. Burton compared the Greek Theater gala to a “giant Halloween party.”

Also enjoying the award show, were Anthony Hopkins, Wes Craven, Zack Snyder, Winona Ryder, John Carpenter, Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman plus hundreds of fans decked out in Freddy Krueger masks and fake blood.

“All the right kind of people are here,” Jackson joked. “There’s a whole bunch of us caught up in this comicbook stuff.”
