‘PVC-1’ honored at Bangkok

Pic takes Golden Kinnaree for best film at fest

BANGKOK – The Columbian terrorist drama “PVC-1” by Spiros Stathoulopoulos won the Golden Kinnaree for best film at the Bangkok Intl Film Festival on Sunday night at the ceremony presided over by Princess Ubolratana.

The three-member jury — Lav Diaz, Aditya Assarat and Eric Khoo — awarded the runner-up prize to Iranian film “Those Three” by Naghi Nemati and a special jury prize to Chilean “Alice in the Land” by Esteban Larrain and “Jay” by Francis Xavier Pasion of the Philippines.

In the Southeast Asian Competition, a new section created to boost Bangkok’s role as a champion of regional cinema, the jury gave the Golden Kinnaree to “Serbis” by another Filipino, Brillante Mendoza. Pic, which preemed in competition in Cannes, was a hit screening at the BKKIFF. The second prize went to “Days of Turquoise Sky” by Malaysian Woo Ming-jin, and a special mention to “Years When I Was a Child Outside” by John Torres.

Sunday was also the last day of the first Thailand Entertainment Expo, a sidebar event organized by Department of Export Promotion. Though the Expo wasn’t a lively marketplace, with only a handful of buyers attending, Thai exhibitors expressed optimism that the comprehensive event that combined film, music, television and production services, was a major step that should be sustained and promoted by the government.

The BKKIFF, which saw an impressive turnout this year, runs until Sept 30. The closing film will be the world premier of “Nanayo,” a new film by Japan’s celebrated auteur director Naomi Kawase.
