Oldenburg fest honors ‘Stranger’

Jury singles out actresses Wolff, Potapenko

BERLIN — Emily Atef’s drama about postnatal depression, “Das fremde in mir” (The Stranger in Me), swept the top awards at the Oldenburg Film Festival.

Pic, which follows a young mother through postpartum depression, picked up the fest’s German Independence Awards for German film and audience favorite as well as the Otto Sprenger Award.

The jury praised the film for its “originality, the strength of the subject matter and the extraordinary performances of the film.”

The jury also singled out two actresses for special mention, Susanne Wolff for her roles in “The Stranger in Me” and in Jan Schuette’s drama “Die gluecklichen,” as well as newcomer Irina Potapenko for her role in Goetz Spielmann’s drama “Revanche,” Austria’s entry for Oscar’s foreign-language category.
