Lightning nabs ‘Christmas’ for U.S.

Pic has been sold to nearly 100 countries

STOCKHOLM — Finnish hit movie “Christmas Story,” which has been sold to nearly 100 countries, has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Lightning Media.

Family pic, which tells the story of Santa’s childhood, will be released in the U.S. in December 2009.

The film features the voices of John Turturro and Noah Emmerich.

The deal was brokered by world sales agent Delphis Films.

Pic, which was the top grossing Finnish film last year, was produced and helmed by Juha Wuolijoki for Snapper Films.

The film will be released in Scandinavia, Spain, Canada, Estonia, Serbia and Greece this Christmas, and it will also be re-released in Finland.

In its initial local run, the $3.7 million production pulled in an audience of 242,800 for a $2.6 million take.
