L.A. Times assigns new film critic

Longtime editor Betsy Sharkey joins Turan

Moving to beef up its film presence after a series of layoffs, the Los Angeles Times has reassigned longtime entertainment editor Betsy Sharkey to serve as a full-time film critic.

The Times raised eyebrows in filmdom when it went down to one full-time film critic, the long-serving Kenneth Turan, in October after the layoffs of 75 editorial staffers included critic Carina Chocano (Daily Variety, Oct. 28).

Sharkey first joined the Times as TV editor, and then served a stint as film editor before being named entertainment editor, overseeing film, TV and pop music coverage. She also helped launch the Times’ award season section, the Envelope.

Sharkey co-authored with Faye Dunaway the memoir “Looking for Gatsby,” and she worked with Marlee Matlin on the upcoming Simon & Schuster release “I’ll Scream Later.”
