Hawaii festival honors ‘Cape No. 7’

Film wins best narrative feature at fest

“Cape No. 7” by Taiwan helmer Wei Te-sheng, has won the Halekulani Golden Orchid for best narrative feature at the 27th Louis Vuitton Hawaii Intl. Film Festival awards.

A feel-good musical comedy-romance about a musician returning to his seaside hometown, pic has notched more than $10 million at the Taiwanese B.O. since Aug. 22 and is on a pace to become the most successful Taiwanese film of all time.

The NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award went to Tara Illenberger’s “Brutus — The Adventure” (The Philippines). Tale of two children caught up in illegal logging operations in a remote area is a presentation of the Cinemalaya Foundation, a non-profit government org supporting local cinema.

The Halekulani Golden Orchid for best documentary was awarded to Anna Keala Kelly’s “Noho Hewa: The Wrongful Occupation of Hawaii,” an examination of sovereignty issues affecting the state’s indigenous population.

The Film in Hawaii award recognizing local achievement was presented to veteran documakers Joan Lander and Puhipau, creators of more than 90 works focused on Hawaiian economic, social and political affairs.

“Coffee and Allah” by New Zealand director Sima Urale took home the Honolulu Magazine award for best short film.

Fest exec director Chuck Boller said promotion of cultural diversity was a key factor in the deliberations of the feature and documentary juries. Prize-winning selections will be given encore screenings prior to fest’s conclusion Oct. 19. Additional awards, including audience vote winner, will be announced Oct. 18.
