Actor to costar with Roberts, Owen, Wilkinson
“John Adams” star Paul Giamatti is going from the pursuit of liberty to “Duplicity.”
Giamatti, who is toplining the seven-part HBO miniseries based on the David McCullough book, has been set by director Tony Gilroy to join Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Tom Wilkinson in the Gilroy-scripted film for Universal.
Giamatti will play an industrialist engaged in a fierce game of corporate one-upmanship against a rival titan, played by Wilkinson (who plays Benjamin Franklin in “John Adams”). Roberts and Owen play two spies-turned-corporate operatives who work on opposite sides but are having a clandestine love affair. Billy Bob Thornton had been in talks for the businessman role.
Producers are Jennifer Fox and Kerry Orent, who reteam with Gilroy after the Oscar-nominated “Michael Clayton,” with Laura Bickford also producing.
