ROME — Oscar-winning Italo tunesmith Nicola Piovani will receive French insignia the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters during a ceremony at the Cannes film fest.
Piovani, who has worked with Federico Fellini, Nanni Moretti, and Roberto Benigni, also composes Gallic pic scores, most recently for Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt’s feelgood fantasy “Odette Toulemonde.”
The Chevalier nod honors artists who have made a significant contribution to French culture.
Piovani will be handed the nod by Gallic Culture Minister Christine Albanel during a Cannes gala on May 21 where he will perform his “Concerto in Quintetto.”
Winner of the original score Oscar in 1997 for Roberto Benigni’s “Life Is Beautiful,” Piovani served on the 1987 Cannes jury.
