Coppola film will star Gallo, Bardem
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Tetro” will star Vincent Gallo (“Buffalo 66,” “The Brown Bunny”), who joins Oscar winner Javier Bardem and Maribel Verdu (“Y tu mama tambien,” “Pan’s Labyrinth”).
Buenos Aires-set tale follows a family “marred by tragedy and betrayal.”
“I know choosing Vincent Gallo to star in my film will raise a few eyebrows,” Coppola said, “but I’m betting that seeing him in the role will open some eyes.”
Helmer indicated the drama was based on some nonfiction experiences but stopped short of calling it autobiographical.
Lensing is set to begin March 31 for an anticipated bow in 2009. Budget is capped at $15 million, with production style said to be similar to that of the director’s 2007 release, “Youth Without Youth.”
Carryovers from “Youth” working on “Tetro” include cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr., composer Osvaldo Golijov, editor Walter Murch and executive producers Anahid Nazarian and Fred Roos.
