Bertolucci, Burton also to be recognized
LISBON — Portugal’s Estoril Film Festival, directed by maverick producer Paulo Branco, will include career tributes to the late Paul Newman and helmers Bernardo Bertolucci and Tim Burton in its second edition, which runs Nov. 14-22.
The event, held in what it claims is Europe’s biggest casino in Estoril, is sponsored by the Portuguese Tourism Board and boasts the brightest star wattage of any Portuguese film fest.
Confirmed guests include Bertolucci, Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich, Agnes Varda, Jerzy Skolimowski, Gerard Depardieu, Paul Auster and Stephen Frears.
A lifelong champion of auteur cinema, Branco views Estoril as a “space for reflection” and an important springboard for niche films.
He will unveil the Official Selection of 14 films on Oct. 28.
Alongside fest screenings, this year’s event includes master classes, a gathering of 20 leading European film critics, a European film schools meeting and the major annual get together of the 60-distributor network, Europa Distribution.
