EFP lines up young stars for Berlin

Shooting Stars program rolls Feb. 7-9

European Film Promotion has cast the young thesps who will appear in its Shooting Stars program, a showcase of new acting talent at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

Among those selected are France’s Hafsia Herzi, whose perf in “La Graine et le mulet” (The Secret of the Grain) earned her a nod at the Cesars, Gaul’s film awards, for breakthrough actress and the Marcello Mastroianni award at Venice for emerging young performer.

Also chosen is Germany’s David Kross, who plays Kate Winslet’s lover in Stephen Daldry’s “The Reader,” and the U.K.’s Carey Mulligan, whose long list of credits includes “And When Did You Last See Your Father?” Mulligan will next be seen alongside Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon in Shana Feste’s “The Greatest” and in Lone Scherfig’s “An Education,” both of which screen at Sundance.

The other actors are Ireland’s Sarah Bolger, who appeared in “In America,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and TV skein “The Tudors”; Denmark’s Cyron Melville (“Fighter”); Finland’s Samuli Vauramo (“Tears of April”); Hungary’s Orsi Toth (“Delta”); Italy’s Alba Caterina Rohrwacher (“Il Papa di Giovanna”); Spain’s Veronica Echegui (“Yo soy la juani”); and Switzerland’s Celine Bolomey (“L’autre moitie”).

Candidates were selected by a jury from names put forward by the EFP’s national member organizations.

This year’s jury consisted of Belgian director Marion Hansel, Spanish producer Antonio Saura, British film historian Peter Cowie, Portuguese casting director Patricia Vasconcelos and Macedonian actress Labina Mitevska.

A series of Shooting Stars events will take place from Feb. 7-9 at the Berlinale, where the actors will be introduced to filmmakers and other industry professionals.
