CFA welcomes HK industryites

China film org opens membership

BEIJING — The powerful China Film Assn., a Communist Party-run org akin to the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Science, has appointed veteran helmer Li Qiankuan as chairman and opened up membership to Hong Kong industryites for the first time.

The org’s eighth National People’s Congress gave vice-chair positions to a galaxy of talent, including Film Bureau head Tong Gang, multi-hyphenate Jackie Chan and helmer Feng Xiaogang, China Film Group reported on its website.

However, it pointedly removed Gong Li, one of China’s biggest stars, from its membership after she took Singaporean citizenship.

Big names from Hong Kong joining the CFA include Chan, Andy Lau, Peter Chan and Gordon Chan.

Other top mainland stars selected to join included rising thesp Zhang Hanyu, Zhang Fengyi, controversial helmer Jia Zhangke and Li Bingbing.

The CFA organizes the Golden Rooster Awards and the Hundred Flowers Film Festival.
