‘Pioneer’ leads CineMart lineup

Rotterdam film market runs Jan. 25-29

BRUSSELS — “Pioneer” from Norwegian helmer Erik Skjoldbjaerg is among 35 feature projects selected for CineMart, the co-production market of the Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam.

The 26th edition of the mart unspools Jan. 25-29.

Skjoldbjaerg is best know Stateside for his 1997 thriller “Insomnia,” remade in 2002 by Christopher Nolan, and his adaptation of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s “Prozac Nation.”

New project “Pioneer” will be a thriller set among the divers in Norway’s off-shore oil industry. Friland AS produces.

Other notable names with projects in Rotterdam include Uruguayan helmer Pablo Stoll, whose “3” is one of a number of intimate family dramas accepted by the CineMart. Control Z Films of Uruguay and Pandora Film Produktion of Germany co-produce.

This will be Stoll’s first time alone behind the camera following the death of collaborator Juan Pablo Rebella. Their slacker comedy “25 Watts” bagged one of Rotterdam’s Tiger awards in 2001, while “Whisky” took them to Cannes in 2004.

Noted Chinese helmer Zhang Yuan (“Seventeen Years,” “Little Red Flowers”) presents “Execution Garden,” produced by Beijing Good Tiding Culture Development Company and Chinese Shadows.

And from South Korea Gina Kim (“Never Forever”) proposes a remake of Ki-Young Kim’s 1960 domestic thriller “The Housemaid.” Mirovision Inc. produces.

New Zealand helmer Taika Waititi presents “Tama,” produced by Whenua Films. Waititi’s debut feature “Eagle vs Shark” played at Sundance in 2007, after shorts attracting Oscar attention and at kudos at the Berlin film fest.

Also on the list are busy Japanese helmer Yamashita Nobuhiro with “My Back Page,” Tiger-nominated Sulev Keedus with “Letters to Ingel,” and tyro Swede Ruben Ostlund. His “Involuntary” toured international fests this year and will play at Rotterdam.
