Card thriller '21' nabs $8.6 million Friday

Gambling thriller “21” paid off for Sony on Friday, hitting the No. 1 spot with $8.6 million from 2,648 theaters.

The opening B.O. posted by the Robert Luketic pic topped the helmer’s previous releases “Monster-in-Law” (estimated $7.8 million) and “Legally Blonde” ($7.6 million), both of which respectively opened at $23.1 million and $20.4 million.  Though those films were comedies, the odds are that “21” will likely best their three-day figures through Sunday.

Fox-Blue Sky’s “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” finally hatched the first $100 million grosser of the year yesterday.  Placing second with $5.3 million from 3,826, the toon’s domestic cume stands at $105.1 million in the midst of its third frame.

Dimension’s send-up “Superhero Movie,” distributed by MGM, opened in third with a less than super $3.4 million from 2,960.  Pic’s first Friday ranks behind the moderate numbers charted by recent spoof “Meet the Spartans” ($6.9 million) and trails Dimension’s April 2006 release “Scary Movie 4” ($19 million).

Fewer auds decided to encounter “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” in its second sesh.  The Lionsgate comedy saw a Friday-to-Friday drop of 73% with $2.2 million from 2,016 and a running take of $27.3 million.

Par’s Owen Wilson comedy “Drillbit Taylor” pounded fifth place with $1.9 million from

3,061, down 54%, bringing its eight-day cume to $16.7 million.

Other wide entries collected less coin than the competish:  Kimberly Peirce’s sophomore outing “Stop-Loss” halted in seventh place with $1.7 million from 1,291 while Picturehouse’s David Schwimmer helmed laffer “Run Fat Boy Run” was winded in tenth with $782,000 from 1,133.

“Under the Same Moon” continued to shine among specialty fare, grabbing $544,000, down 23%, after the Weinstein Co. upticked the Spanish-lingo pic’s theater count from 266 to 390. In the midst of its second frame, “Moon” has translated into $5 million at the domestic B.O.
