‘Red Cliff’ still tops B.0. in Japan

WWII drama 'Seashell' ranks at No. 2

TOKYO — Helmer John Woo’s period epic “Red Cliff” topped the Japanese weekend box office for the fourth week, earning ¥21.8 million ($3.2 million) for a cume of $31.4 million.

It is the first foreign pic to top the B.O. for four weeks since last year’s “I Am Legend.”

Among the four new pics entering the top 10 last weekend, WWII drama “I Want to Be a Seashell” ranked highest at No. 2. Opening on 330 screens, the pic earned $4.27 million over the three-day weekend, Nov. 22-24. Masahiro Nakai, a member of the megastar pop band Smap and a frequent presence on TV,  stars as a small-town barber who is drafted into the Imperial Army and, after Japan’s defeat, arrested as a war criminal. Distrib Toho is expecting a cume in the neighborhood of $30 million.

Among other new pics bowing in the top 10 were “Tropic Thunder” at No.6, “Blindness” at No. 7 and “1408” at No 9.

Staying in the top 10 for the eighth straight week was mystery-thriller “Suspect X,” with a cume of $47 million.
