Epic still holds on to top of box office

TOKYO — Helmer John Woo’s period epic “Red Cliff: Part I” is top of Japan’s box office for the third straight week, with a cume of $26 million from 2 million admissions.

Pic reached both figures in 16 days, following its Nov. 1 bow. The only other foreign pic to equal the achievement this year was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

The highest ranking new pic for the weekend of Nov. 15-16 was Shinobu Yaguchi’s airplane comedy “Happy Flight,” which grabbed the No. 2 spot with $2.24 million on 163,562 admissions. The pic opened on 307 screens, with Toho distributing.

The local pic holding the No. 1 spot longest this year was helmer Hayao Miyazaki’s toon “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,” which topped the B.O. for six weeks.
