SEOUL — Kimchee Western “The Good the Bad the Weird” dominated local theaters on its first weekend after opening Thursday on 700 screens. Key investor and distributor CJ Entertainment reported Sunday that the pic attracted 1.55 million admissions in the three days from Thursday to Saturday, which amounts to box office of $9.77 million.
The company also announced that 680,000 tickets were sold at 816 screens alone Saturday, anticipating that opening-weekend admissions including Sunday will surpass 2.2 million. Pic is the fastest to cross the 2 million mark in South Korea this year. No. 2 “Public Enemy Returns” surpassed 2 million ticket sales in its eighth day of release.
Pic also scored the highest opening-day B.O. in South Korea this year with $2.52 million from 400,000 admissions. The year’s previous opening day record holder was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” which was released May 22 and saw 212,000 admissions.
Pic’s opening day was the third best on record, following “D-War” in 2007 (470,000 admissions) and “The Host” in 2006 (450,000).
