Oliver Stone has been named the artistic director of NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia. The “W.” helmer, an NYU grad himself, will advise Tisch Asia president Sara Shirazi on the direction of the school’s Singapore campus. No starting date for Stone has been announced, but the university says that he may teach courses and conduct workshops in addition to his a.d. duties.
Stone has lived in Southeast Asia before, in Vietnam, where he arrived as a teacher. “I hope, in the same capacity, to continue to learn from Asia and its students,” he said. From 1967-68, Stone served in the U.S. Army Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor.
Tisch’s Singapore campus opened in 2007 and is NYU’s first campus outside of New York City.
