Original screenplay: Wall-E

Andrew Stanton & Pete Docter (original story), Andrew Stanton & Jim Reardon (screenplay)

Pixar continues to push the envelope when it comes to animated storytelling.Tale of a plucky trash compactor that falls in love with a sleek spacefaring probe has high-tech echoes of “Aladdin” and Charlie Chaplin and sets up lovely visual storytelling. Wall-E’s beeps and clicks may not rival Paul Haggis’ dialogue, but they do call them “moving pictures,” after all.

WHY IT’LL WIN: It’s a tearjerker with a politically correct environmental message.

MAYBE NOT: It’s animated, it’s about robots and it’s almost a silent movie.
