By presenting the gay rights movement as a civil rights struggle, this script could have been an issue in the Proposition 8 debate if it had come out in October. It might be more poignant, though, for coming out later. Scripter Black did an uncanny job of finding parallels between Milk’s era and the present day. Its portrayal of men actually enjoying intimacy with other men also seems daring in an
era when the neutered gay best friend has become a reliable stock character.
WHY IT’LL WIN: Resonates with current issues; has meaty roles for actors.
MAYBE NOT: It’s a conventional biopic at heart; some Acad members are still uncomfortable with gays.
