Newcomer grabs kudos at Oz Arias

Cilmi takes six awards for 'Lessons'

SYDNEY — Tyro warbler Gabriella Cilmi swept the Aria Awards — Oz’s most prestigious music kudos — on Sunday night, taking home six awards for her debut disk, “Lessons to Be Learned.”

Cilmi, unknown 12 months ago, won awards including breakthrough artist — album, highest selling single for smash hit “Sweet About Me” and the coveted female artist kudo.

Second to Cilmi’s haul was electro duo the Presets, which took home three trophies including album of the year for “Apocalypso.” The wins cap a great year for the pair, including a growing following in Europe.

The kudos, held in Sydney, also honored indigenous artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, who won two awards: world music album and independent album for his offering “Gurrumul,” a collection of acoustic ballads sung in his native tongue, Yolngu.
