Contest to select young acting talent
LONDON — British thesp James McAvoy has joined the panel of judges selecting the five-strong shortlist for BAFTA’s Orange Rising Star Award, which will be voted on by the public from Jan. 8.
McAvoy, who won the first Orange Rising Star Award in 2006, is joined on the jury by actress Kelly Macdonald, casting director Fiona Weir, helmer Susanna White, producer Allon Reich and producer Finola Dwyer, who is chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee. The jury is chaired by producer David Parfitt, who is chairman of BAFTA.
Others on the jury are journalists Nev Pierce of Empire, Dean Piper of Closer, James Christopher of the Times, David Edwards of the Daily Mirror, Charles Gant and Ben Jones of Absolute Radio.
The award, which was created in honor of casting director Mary Selway, recognizes actors who have broken into mainstream cinema with an eye-catching perf in a feature pic this year.
The award was won by Eva Green in 2007 and Shia LaBeouf last year.
