‘Eastern Promises’ tops DGC Awards

David Cronenberg drama nabs five prizes

TORONTO — David Cronenberg’s Russian mob drama “Eastern Promises” swept the 2008 Directors Guild of Canada Awards, nabbing five prizes: best feature, director, production design, picture editing and sound editing.

The gala ceremony, held Saturday in Toronto and hosted by comedian Shaun Majumder, saw the family feature film prize go to Laurie Lynd’s “Breakfast With Scot,” starring Tom Cavanagh.

Television awards went to CBC’s “Intelligence” (drama), CTV’s “Corner Gas” (comedy) and “Degrassi: The Next Generation” (family show), while miniseries “Durham County,” which preemed on the Movie Network and Movie Central last year, won direction and picture editing.

The DGC reps more than 3,800 creative and logistical film and TV workers.
