Graphic novels are taken seriously as literature; “The Dark Knight” asks moviegoers to take it just as seriously. Pic probably sparked more serious debate (remember “Is W. the Dark Knight?”?) than any other movie this year. When a Batman movie enters the cultural and political conversation, take notice. It wove together superhero mythology, current politics and timeless themes of power and its limits.
WHY IT’LL WIN: Serious themes, great entertainment and a billion dollars in gross.
MAYBE NOT: Some found it confusing and/or depressing. And it’s still a comicbook movie.
