This tale of a man who ages backward turns Fitzgerald’s bit of whimsy into a meditation on loss and grief, yet somehow manages to be uplifting in the process. “Forrest Gump” scripter Roth thus transforming another passive protagonist into a globe-trotting hero. The central conceit could have been a gimmick but ends up giving a bittersweet insight into the arc of a human life.
WHY IT’LL WIN: It’s a glossy epic with plenty of emotion.
MAYBE NOT: Script may be overshadowed by design, visual effects and direction.
