HONG KONG – British short film “This Way Up” was named ‘best in show’ at the first running of the SIGGRAPH Asia computer graphics convention in Singapore (Dec 10-13).
“This Way Up,” about a cross country journey with a coffin was directed by Smith & Foulkes of Nexus Productions.
Jury awards went to “Kudan,” a Japanese 3-D computer animated fantasy by Taku Kimura and Links DigiWorks, and to “Oktapodi,” a slapstick comedy by six students from the Gobelins, l’ecole de l’image in France.
“Eighty percent of visitors to SIGGRAPH Asia 2008 were from within the (Asian) region, including Australia and New Zealand. The excellent quality of work we have seen at SIGGRAPH Asia and the ideas that have been put forth bode well for the interactive and digital media industry in Asia,” Alyn Rockwood, advisory group chairman, SIGGRAPH Asia Conference, said.
“The Computer Animation Festival itself saw overwhelming support from the industry and public alike, with close to 1,300 people attending the Electronic Theatre sessions,” said Jinny Choo, chair, Computer Animation Festival 2008. “All of the shows were completely sold out.”
Next year SIGGRAPH Asia will relocate to Yokohama, Japan (Dec 16-19, 2009) with the 2010 edition shifting to Seoul, South Korea.
