Fox Searchlight’s Spanish-language specialty pic “Under the Same Moon,” about a Mexican boy crossing the U.S. border in order to be reunited with his immigrant mother, tried to court a wide audience in theaters and came up short. However, family audiences will likely discover the crowd-pleasing road trip on DVD.

The disc’s extras are short, but sweet. A 25-minute behind-the-scenes docu is surprisingly in-depth and includes (mostly en Espanol) conversations with director Patricia Riggen, most of the cast (including breakout star Adrian Alonso and supporting player America Ferrera), and various crew members.

The disc also includes a brief, but fascinating, look at L.A.’s street mural culture that plays a small part in the film and documents the creation of a huge mural (in the Boyle Heights neighborhood) depicting characters and scenes from the film.

One nitpick: The English subtitles act more like close-captioning, unnecessarily describing sounds like source music, car horns and slamming doors seen onscreen. It’s distracting for non-Spanish speakers who aren’t hard of hearing.
