The Savages

Writer/Director Tamara Jenkins dense and poignant tale of sibling tolerability may have found a critical boost this past Winter, but 'The Savages' still remained relatively unseen. Perhaps it was the cold subject matter (a brother and sister enroll their dimentia-ridden father in a nursing home) or the fact that the indie drama had a limited theatrical bow. Still, the end result seemed to filter out nearly everything BUT the personal accolades (Jenkins and actress Laura Linney both received Oscar noms), and the same goes for Fox Searchlight's new DVD.

The single disc consists of the award-winning pic (viewers can take solace in the outstanding perfs from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Linney, who manage to crispen the daft world their characters inhabit) and a rudimentary special features option, waiving a few, bland scenes of senior song and dance.

After that, Jenkins unloads a gallery of set images using her “trusty Ricon GRI” with husband/scribe/exec producer Jim Taylor. The black and white images capture the crew hard at work in Arizona and New York, which was probably a hit at the wrap party but definitely a snoozer on the small screen.

Although icey, consumers shouldn’t fail to charter this trying DVD, as mortality and old age are beautifully synchonized by Jenkins, but given the frail and morose nature of the entire package, the bus stops there.
