‘Bugmaster’ to get N. American run

Japanese live action film bought by FUNimation

TOKYO — FUNimation Entertainment has acquired various North American rights to “Mushi-shi” (Bugmaster), a live-action pic by anime auture Katsauhiro Otomo.

It will screen the pic theatrically and release it on DVD in 2009.

 Based on a comic by manga artist Yuki Urushibara, the pic stars Joe Odagiri as a natural healer with power over mysterious creatures called Mushi.

 It preemed at the 2006 Venice Film Festival and was released in Japan in March 2007 by Toshiba Entertainment.

Toshiba subsequently sold its pic and DVD biz to ad shop Hakuhodo.

There is also a TV toon based on the comic that bowed in 2005, helmed by Hiroshi Nagahama.
