Known to the world as Gabe and Tycho, wiseguys Holkins and Krahulik are revered by fans for their thrice-weekly jokes at the expense of the industry, its games and fans in the web comic Penny Arcade.
Nearly a decade after the duo first submitted the strip to a magazine contest, Penny Arcade reaches more than 3.5 million viewers per month. But it has also become a multimedia empire. The annual Penny Arcade Expo is the nation’s biggest convention for game fans and is expected to draw 50,000 visitors this August.
This year, the duo also produced their first videogame, “Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.” Krahulik says the process gave him a new appreciation for the game creators Penny Arcade often jabs. “It’s so hard. I can’t believe people do that,” he admits.
