‘Madagascar’ tops Russian box office

Animated film sets records in region

MOSCOW — Children’s cartoon animal caper “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is set to become the biggest animated film of all time in the Russian and Ukrainian markets — less than a week after its release.

The DreamWorks pic, distributed by Paramount, broke box office records in the territory, taking $22 million by Monday after five days in release, distributor Paramount said.

The 635-screen release — the first stage of the pic’s international rollout — surpassed the lifetime estimate of DreamWorks most recent animation in the territory, “Kung Fu Panda,” and by Wednesdaywas set to become the biggest-ever cartoon release in the region, said Andrew Cripps, Paramount Pictures Intl. president.
