Thousands Protest Proposition 8

Earlier this evening I was on Sunset Boulevard, where demonstrators are marching through the Strip in opposition to Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriage in California.

Shouting “Equality now!,” they drew cheers from those sidewalk dining at various restaurants like Chin Chin. The protests were peaceful, and a Sheriff’s deputy escorted them through the streets of West Hollywood, creating extensive traffic snarls along the way. They later marched as far east as Hollywood and Highland, as news helicopters recorded the scene from above.

KCAL showed footage of a few protesters in scuffles with police officers as the protest spilled over to Hollywood, which is within Los Angeles city limits.

Earlier, City Councilman John Duran and Lorri Jean, CEO of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, spoke to thousands of supporters of marriage rights at a rally at West Hollywood Park. San Vicente Boulevard was blocked off for the event.
