The Focus Features biopic of gay civil rights icon Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official, is prescient – to some inspirational; to others reminders of what went wrong in fighting the ballot initiative.

The New York Times also looks at the “Milk”-Prop 8 connection here, including details on one group’s effort to boycott Cinemark Theatres, where Focus plans some screenings of the movie. Their Nomilkforcinemark .com calls for a boycott, just as Milk himself helped lead a boycott of Coors beer 30 years ago. Cinemark’s CEO, Alan Stock, made contributions to the Yes on 8 campaign.
