Streisand to Sing for Obama

Barbra Streisand will be among the headliners at a fund-raiser for Barack Obama on Sept. 16, where she will perform for the presidential candidate at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

The plans for the event were outlined this morning and Streisand confirmed that she would take the stage. The hotel ballroom holds an estimated 700 people.

Obama’s fund-raiser is expected to be his final visit to raise money here before the general election.

Obama will start the evening with a 5 p.m. dinner event for about 250 people at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, the historic estate once owned by the legendary Doheny family. Tickets for the event are $28,500.

Later, he will attend a reception at the Beverly Wilshire, followed by Streisand’s special performance. Tickets for the event are $2,500 per person.

Co-hosts for event include the DreamWorks team of Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, as well as political consultant Andy Spahn. It’s also being organized with Obama’s Southern California finance team.

Streisand endorsed Obama after he secured the nomination in June. She had endorsed Hillary Clinton in the primary, and appeared and spoke at a fund-raiser for her in January. She also sang at a concert for John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000.

The timing of this Obama visit is giving new meaning to the words, “quick turnaround,” as organizers have just eight days to put the fetes together.

On her Website, Streisand chimed in last week on John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin, writing, “We are not that stupid.”

She wrote, “I believe John McCain chose Gov. Palin because he truly believes that women who supported Hillary — an experienced, brilliant, life-long public servant — would vote for him because his Vice President has two x chromosomes. McCain’s selection of Governor Palin is a transparent and irresponsible decision all in the name of trying to win this election.”

  1. Jen says:

Here we go again with the celebrities!
If Obama gets in he would obviously run the White house in a similar manner. Hollywood politics will ruin this nation.
Barack HUSSEIN Obama is nothing but a puppet. Listen to him address large crowds like a confident rock star, having fans swoon. Now give him a one on one interview asking him to answer direct questions and he can’t even say a sentence without an “Um and an Aaaah” in it. This person is not competent, he is nothing but a suit full of EGO and attracts the same type of shallow followers into his brainwashing show.
Stay tuned, if Mega-Steisand doesn’t turn it around for him we heard he has plans to have Christ appear.

  2. Lisa says:

What exactly has Obama done? What?
I understand the fund raiser, they are running low on cash and they are desparate. Who cares if Babs sings for him. We all know she is a very liberal democrat, but I don’t think it’s fair call her names. I don’t think she is going to help in ANY way, and it is obvious from some of these post that a lot of people actually think it is going to hurt him. As to the tumult going on in Russia, it is unforunate, but a reality and we have to do the right thing. And please don’t forget that we have had democrats in power for quite a while, through the Senate and the House, they are in point of fact quite responisble for the mess we are currently in.
Again, I don’t think we should call names or use foul language, it reflects badly on all of us. I understand it is done with frustration, that the media bias has been driving us all nuts, but I also think we are better than that. And at least he isn’t having Jane Fonda.

  3. Glenn says:

I wonder if DeNiro will show up at the event with another syringe full of truth serum, but this time intended for Babs instead of Fokker. It would be great fun to hear what she REALLY thinks about BHO vs. HRC!

  4. scooternyc says:

Streisand continues her life of being a victim without realizing that freedom and choice are not only self-evident, but self-determining in any individual’s life.
Her consistent socialistic views on life all the while enjoying the benefits of the free market, are just shocking when couched in her criticism.
For a woman who has railed against others for keeping women down, and if I’m not mistaken in an interview back in the 70’s, she made the comment time again about a woman being able to do it all.
Like most people, Streisand is spouting off like she thinks that she knows something. Site your sources Ms. Streisand; lay out your data to be vetted by readers to explain and/or falsify your accusations of the politicians your so disdain.
Victims rarely have anything other than “emotion” by which to rely on when speaking about any subject.
I’d say shut up and sing but you can barely do that well, anymore.

  5. Maxine Weiss says:

$28,500.00 a plate: From McGovern to Mondale, the high-cost of singing for losers is a Streisand tradition.
Although, I don’t think she sang for Gray Davis—the one that got away.

  6. Chelsea says:

WOW, even my mum & dad can’t believe she is unretiring yet again! Last time she sang I was in the front row & could hardly keep a straight face she was so aweful!
Obama would do better with a swinging rusty gate with a little jewish accent added to the screawk.
Oh well, I am not sitting in front this time, thank goodness dad is still PO’d at Obama.

  7. Robby says:

Alvin…did you just call somebody a “racist” and “antisemite” because they said something negative about Babs and Barack? Don’t you think that’s just a little bit silly?

  8. Gez says:

Gosh…I would love to be a fly on the wall in that socialist lovefest….

  9. pb says:

    gore 2000
    kerry 2004
    obama 2008
bab’s keep on singing ….anybody see the pattern

  10. Robby says:

A few thousand in campaign contributions in exchange for another nail in the political coffin? That’s what I call…
    “Judgement To Lead”
    “Change We Can Believe In”

  11. Wehodem says:

When did the Daily Variety become the neo-cons’ punching bag? Don’t you racists/anti-semites have better things to do? Stop wasting your time and get busy spreading more lies about Obama!

  12. Alvin Brickrock says:

Babs didn’t have a single misspelling or typo in her blog. I wonder who wrote it for her?

  13. Earl says:

This along seals a McCain/Palin vote for all thinking folks

  14. Mark L. says:

Hey c’mon everyone. Obama is just an ordinary person looking out for the needs of other ordinary people. He’s just like you and me. Its elitists like Sarah Palin that are destroying this country. NOT!!!
I remember a night back in 1992 some “news” showed a shot of George Bush Sr. sitting in a little two man motor boat fishing off the coast of Maine and the commentators were implying that he was an elitist and out of touch with the people. That SAME night, SAME station, a different news segment had Bill and Hillary Clinton at some black-tie event on some 100 foot yacht, and the commentators were going on about how he was just a commoner, an ordinary person working for the rights of ordinary people. What a crock! And people say our press doesn’t lean way left??? Give me a break. And Barbara Streisand… what a waste of DNA.

  15. Stephanie says:

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Streisand’s initials are B.S. Considering the fact that she’s a Kool-Aid drinking leftist, the initials fit her perfectly.

  16. Robby says:

They don’t move…they just buy another house out of the country. Like it matters anyway.
The dems are blowing it. They had a sure win with Hillary/Obama. They went for Obama/Biden instead? It’s like last year when they nominated Kerry. The country was in the middle of a war we didn’t want to turn out to be another Vietnam and they nominated one of the chief architects of its defeat. Smart. How about Al Gore before that. Another brillian move.
Now its Babs hosting big dollar fund raisers for Obama. Stupid is as stupid does.

  17. Stephanie says:

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Streisand’s initials are B.S. Considering the fact that she’s a Kool-Aid drinking leftist, the initials fit her perfectly.

  18. rachel says:

All these over the top leftists, Hollywoodheads and Palestinians around the world trying to help Obama, is just making it worse for him. I’m sure he’s thinkg, “PLEASE!! Don’t help me, you’re not helping me!”.
    He’s finished. Game, set, match.

  19. Larry says:

I am heartened to see that so many people who read Variety see Obama for what he has been and has always been throughtout this campaign from the beginning- an empty suit who hates (yes, hates) this country and thus wants to change it to his socialist vision. Good riddance to the guilt ridden super rich leftists. Their arrogance and self-righteousness will not be missed.

  20. LiberalLefty says:

Amazing how people are squaking about this. Obama doesn’t take public financing (you know, the money that we taxpayers contribute), and yet people are bitching about Streisand performing when no one’s asking them to go.

this is Week 1 of the beginning of the end for Obama/Biden.

  23. Nora says:

Gosh Mike sorry it made no sense to you at all. I am shocked. Obama was called a celebrity by the McWho campaign cause he had more than 6 people at his campaign functions and Pat Boone came out about 2 weeks ago saying ugly stuff about Obama for no apparent reason other than the fact he is voting for McWho. McWho supporters are not the only ones privilaged to say what they want. What is it you think I am afraid of another 4 or 8 years of the same crap we have had with Bush, I am glad that came shining through!!!Obama/Biden 08

  24. theporch says:

You are right about the comments. Guess some here have been reading the hate from the kos kids and over reacting.

In honor of Babs (i.e. the Big has-been) to perform for another great set of “has beens” or “never-weres” (the Obamas) I’d like to dedicate this little ditty sung to the title tune from “Hello Dolly”
Well, hello Obama, well hello Obama it’s so nice to see you go back where you came from (corrupt Chicago-land politics)
There’s not a piece of legislation that you DIDN’T vote on your socialized meds and free lunch message are getting old
Your wife’s an ice queen and when I see her you I want to scream but the message that I love from her is from way back when…
“I really love my country”, there’s a first first time for everything…”
Obama make sure you go away… Michelle make sure you go away… Just make sure that you go away and NEVER RUN AGAIN.
Maybe we can get Babs to set her calendar 4 yrs. from now and she can majorly jinx/wammy another Democratic campaign. She’s like Ross Perot, Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan rolled up into one.
    Peace to the Obama’s
    (one finger)

  27. nick says:

Are u people reading these comments. Such HATE. Is this from the Christian Right with compassion ? And You call yourselves AMERICAN ? Shame on you.

  28. Bob says:

She sang for Gore and Kerry. Well, that turned out well.

  29. ljw says:

I’m shocked that so many “haters” of Hollywood would read Variety? Why are so many people apposed to this benefit concert? McCain/Palin will surely do something similar. I do realize it is a lot of money, but if people are willing to spend it there in Hollywood, why mock them or discourage it??? If you’re not a fan of Babs, than save your $28.500!
We should just be glad people are so involved in the election and showing support for a candidate, whether it be Democratic or Republican.
My vote is for Obama, and it has nothing to do with who sings for him. I believe in him and his message.
VOTE Obama/Biden ’08 says the educated liberal!!!

  30. Sue - Florida says:

    Barbara WHO?……..
I thought the Almighty Obama promised CHANGE???
Another GIFT to McCain from Obama…. thanks!

  32. glc says:

Hey, I’m a Republican and I don’t even like Toby Keith.
And I used to enjoy listening to Streisand.
You can tout her record sales all day long, but her record sales don’t protect our borders, or fight terrorism, or keep taxes low, or keep our government smaller than it needs to be.
McCain is the most qualified and best candidate for President of the United States.
But this fundraiser featuring Streisand is just too much. What a joke.
Will folks fly in on their huge private jets?
Or will they walk (completely “green” way of transportation) from their homes or hotels?
Will they serve some type of fish on the endangered species list?
Will they pass out the lyrics to “Kum By Ya” for everyone to sing to the terrorists to defend our nation?
    Will Oprah donate and attend?
Will the attendees be limited to one square of toilet paper when they use the facilities at the Beverly Wilshire?

  33. Mike says:

You shouldn’t talk about fear. I can smell yours from Seattle. I support McCain and I am better educated than you, I assure you. Because someone doesn’t support Obama does NOT make them a racist, nor does it make them a flunkie. Relinquishing control? Do you understand what voting is? Do you understand how it works and why? Yeah, people don’t want to vote for Obama because they are afraid of relinquishing control. Control of what? How? I guess because the DNC had more people of color (I’ll take your word for it) at their convention that means they must be right and I must be a fool for not supporting them. LMAO! Thank you very much for supporting Obama. McCain wouldn’t want the liability that comes with you.

  34. Lucas McCain says:

The Sports Illustrated curse…The Madden curse…The Streisand curse.

  35. jenna says:

Marcus, I actually have a degree in Literature and Politics. What’s about you? I completely agree with you, the public education system is dumbing everybody down. Unfortunately my post had been cut of, I was also going on about conserving ideals like freedom for all, discussed alternative energy to protect the amazing nature preserves of our country. I am proud of being a true conservative. That’s why I vote for Obama, he would never get though with liberal ideas, he’s just a glimmer of hope for less destruction, that’s all.

  36. PattyP says:

Opps, that should be, AG, gun toting Jew for McCain and Sarahcuda – are you single?

  37. theporch says:

“I don’t think that when you look at what is being promulgated on Fox News, let’s say, and Republican commentators who are closely allied to these folks,” Mr Obama responded, and Mr. Stephanopoulos interrupted: “But John McCain said that’s wrong.”
Mr. Obama noted that when Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin “was forced” to talk about her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, he issued a forceful statement to reporters that the line of inquiry was “off limits.” But he said the McCain campaign tried to tie him to “liberal blogs that support Obama” and are “attacking Governor Palin.”
“Let’s not play games,” he said. “What I was suggesting — you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about “MY MUSLIM FAITH”. And you’re absolutely right that that has not come.”

  38. c. moore says:

bahbwa – puh-leeze, stick to singing.
on politics, you simply seem like an IDIOT!
and you cannot compete against Sarah Palin. she is MUCH more woman than you!

  39. That’s how Obama gets punished for losing, he gets Babs to sing him a “I’m a loser”. At least you can’t argue about her experience in the matter…

  40. Observer says:

this campaign is so over. McCain has won.

  41. Gary says:

If we’re lucky maybe Babs will “consider” moving if McCain wins, as Sarandon has promised to. “Oh, no! Please don’t consider moving! I’ll change my vote!”
Who the hell do these people think they are that we care if they move or not? Like I even know/care where they live.

  42. That RaineyGirl says:

If it were not so pathetic, it would be laughable. It is obvious to all industry people that these ‘bloggers’ have an alert set to anything which mentions Obama and they spew their venom on any site without regard for the people they are posting to.
They are illiterate, racist and disrespectful. They are full of fear. If Obama was all-white instead of only half, he would win by a landslide, but they are so afraid of relinquishing control that it is impossible for them to look at the facts.
I am surprised that Variety is even posting some of them, but be comforted that it is probably just a couple of McCain flunkies masquerading under several screennames who have no interest in our industry or doing anything productive for OUR country. Just do what we need to and vote for the person who speaks to all the people…(the DNC convention was a beautiful mix of all ages and ethnicities)…not just the good VERY old boys.

  43. Mike says:

That made NO sense at all. She is not a celebrity but a sitting governor (who is in the papers this week for obvious reasons).
Does McCain like Pat Boone? Why would he come out of retirement? McCain doesn’t need him and I think you know it better than I do. Vote your conscience and I will vote mine and we will see who wins.
But try and hide your irrational fear better next time. It is shining through.
    Mike J. Tripous

  44. hex says:

Too bad the left hijacked the Dem party like terrorists. Hillary would have waltzed thru the election. Far Left Barack has no experience & looks troubled after the RNC.

Her Tony was a non-competitive award for Star of the Decade, which is why most people attribute this first to others (such as Rita Moreno) who won all four awards in competitive categories.
    Toby Keith? Indeed

  46. PeterMac in NYC says:

First Sean (P-whatever) Combs comes out against McCain in his egomaniacal rant to his non-voting fans (or to the ether!) on Youtube, then Michael Moore takes a break from eating to endorse Obama and Larry King gives that fool an hour of CNN time and now Babs comes out for Obama and will sing for him. How much is he paying? He would do much better paying the fortune for one of her concert tickets and asking her to kindly keep her favorable opinion of him to herself. This will cost him a lot more than money in the end. The RNC would probably pay her good money for her endorsement of Obama as they know how much and what it means to Republicans, conservative, centrist and far right.

  47. BN says:

Yeah that’ll help in Pennsylvania. Maybe she’ll give a trademark tirade as an opener.

  48. Scottie says:

  49. WhatTheFrig? says:

Did you guys run the math? This is INSANE. The private dinner and Bab’s “concert” totals $8.875 MILLION DOLLARS. Disgusting. Elitist. Totally irrelevant = Babs. How are the Democrats for the working people again?
