There’s a list of some 48 — yes, that is 48 — balls planned for Barack Obama’s inauguration, but only a select few are designated as "official." That is, they are those that Obama’s inaugural committee has chosen as official events, and it goes to assume that they stand the greatest chance of the new president attending.
According to a list circulating around D.C., there are nine "official" inaugural balls, with rather generic names: Commander in Chief, Constitution, Democracy, Freedom, Independence, Liberty, Patriot, Stars and Stripes and Texas Wyoming. Each ball corresponds to a handful of host states. The list may not be complete, as D.C. tourism officials have been told there will be 10 official balls.
