Per the Politico, the Obama campaign is condemning a new song by rapper Ludacris that include these lyrics:
“Hillary hated on you, so that bitch is irrelevant,” say the lyrics. “McCain don’t belong in ANY chair unless he’s paralyzed Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped.”
Spokesman Bill Burton said, “As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn’t want his daughters or any children exposed to. This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics.”
Stars are lining up to support Obama, but it’s hard to see how the candidate’s associations with the entertainment industry can help him at this point. The GOP attacks on his trip to Germany as something akin to David Hasselhoff may seem desperate to some, but Obama himself has told interviewers that voters need to see him in the heartland dealing with bread and butter issues of the economy. And I’m not sure that the way to appeal to populism is via Us and People covers. The problem for the campaign is that it really has no control over what adoring stars say — or when they say it.
