Kadokawa becomes a comic fan

Media unit to publish books for young adults

TOKYO — Japan’s media conglom Kadokawa Group Holdings has linked with Chinese publisher Guangzhou Comicfans Culture to publish comics and novels targeted at young adults, Kadokawa announced on Monday.

The pair will also nurture Chinese comic artists and writers with the aim of launching new talent in China, Japan and the rest of Asia as well.

Guangzhou Comicfans Culture will be able to call on the support of Kadokawa publishing ventures in Taiwan and Hong Kong, including the provision of Kadokawa content already translated into Chinese.

Several Japanese companies, such as Kodansha and Recruit, are active in the publishing biz in China, but Kadokawa’s partnership with a local publisher is a rare case.

Guangzhou Comicfans Culture, part of the Comicfans Culture Media Group, has already published nearly 1,000 Japanese comic titles, including the iconic Osamu Tezuka manga “Astro Boy.”

In 2007 Comicfans Culture Media Group reported consolidated sales of nearly $11.3 million.
