Nonprofit to create web, TV docs on environment
Dr. Heidi Cullen, the climate expert who hosts the “Forecast Earth” series for the Weather Channel, has joined the team putting together a nonpartisan organization called Climate Central.
Staffed by more than a dozen scientists and funded by Wendy Schmidt and her Schmidt Family Foundation, Climate Central will explain global warming and other environmental issues, operating out of headquarters in Princeton, N.J., and an office in Palo Alto, Calif.
In Princeton, Climate Central will set up a production facility to edit documentaries made for TV and the Internet. Charles Lyons, a former writer-producer for ABC News and former reporter for Variety, will be the inhouse producer for Climate Central, which is holding meeings with broadcast and cable networks to offer expertise and funding for programs about the environment.The executive director of Climate Central is Berrien Moore, who was most recently director of the U. of New Hampshire’s Institute for the Study of Earth Oceans & Space.
“Climate Central is about using the best science to build a road map for the fuure in order to help us navigate the tough choices ahead,” said Cullen, who has a Ph.D. from Columbia U. and will divide her time between Climate Central and the Weather Channel.
