Court orders forfeit of five VCD lines
HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court finally ordered the forfeit Wednesday of five video compact disk production lines, ending a piracy case that has been dragging on for nearly 10 years.
The equipment was seized in August 1998 by Hong Kong Customs and Excise in raids on two factories, Wah Lee Multi-Media and Maytronic Industrial.
Three defendants, including the owners of the factories, were jailed for periods ranging between 21 and 30 months in 2005.
Earlier this week Thai police arrested three people in raids on two distribution centers and 11 retail outlets in the Banmor area of Bangkok. Some 25,000 discs were seized including “Alien vs. Predator 2,” “American Gangster” and “I Am Legend.”
The Motion Picture Assn. said it will contact other rights owners to help identify the rest of the pirated products.
