The mercury was hitting the 108-degree mark as Ed Begley Jr. drove his fuel-saving Prius into Palm Desert. The environmentally savvy Begley was there to sample the new Green Switch system. He explained to me how it saves energy when you don’t need it–like when you’re out of the house–hit the Green Switch and all the non-essential, constantly runinng items shut down. He’s sold on it and will further demonstate on his TV’er, “Living With Ed’s” series, Aug.27. Last week Larry Hagman guested on the show and talked his all-solar-powered home. We’ll see it on a September seg.
Ed Begley Jr. was among us at the premiere of Michael Moore’s “Sicko” at the Academy last week. And Ed will be among those attending a July 23 event in support of California Assembly’s bill SB840. It’s a single payer, Universal Health care plan in which everyone pays into the system according to ability, and everyone gets all his medical needs met. If California can initiate this system, it will be the prototype for the rest of the nation–much as California now is for its billion-$ funding for stem cell research–which has resulted in scientists wending their way to California to do their research. The bill is authored by State Senator Sheila Kuel who will head the July 23 gathering to urge high-profile Hollywoodians to lend their support to the health care movement. Kathy Fields is one of those spearheading the event. She is married to David Lander, “Squiggy” of “Laverne and Shirley.” He has M.S. and knows only too well the cost of medical attention. Michael Moore, at the “Sicko” Acad preem, told Fields he’d be at the bash–if he’s not on tour with the pic–but would at least provide a taped appearance for the Bill which is like the French health system so well-illustrated in “Sicko.” Lily Tomlin and Cindy Williams are among the first who have said they’ll be there. Celebs at the “Sicko” preem included: Oliver Stone, John Cusack, Lisa Kudrow, Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels, Larry David, Larry Charles, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and Natasha Gregson Wagner.
