Sahl-ty As Ever

Mort Sahl is still swinging. Observing that George W. was at Kennebunkport with Bush, pere, following his  announcement of the commutation of “Scooter” Libby’s jail sentence, Sahl said to me, “The apple doesn’t rot far from the tree.”  Too bad Sahl is not playing a gig this week to capitalize on the Bush bunch’s not-so-funny comedy opportunity. But Sahl will still have time — and not doubt opportunities–to deliver his well-honed humor in the near future. He’s booked at Jay Leno’s favorite spot, the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, followed by McCabe’s in Santa Monica,  the Monterey Jazz Fest, and Jimmy Jingle’s in Cambridge, Mass. And all this before he starts teaching a classes at Claremont McKenna,

Sahl’s contributions to the world of serious comedy was celebrated at a belated 80th birthday on June 28 with a cordon of comedians plying their specific wares. None was in the caustic class of Sahl. But he told me he “was touched” by them and was most appreciative of the night which raised  close to $100,000 for the Heartland Comedy Foundation “which raises funds for comedians who are having a hard time financially.”   This week, Sahl dined with director John Avildsen who admitted to him, “I couldn’t get ‘Save The Tiger’ made now.” Sahl upped him with, “You probably couldn’t even get ‘Rocky’ made now!”
