The Douglas family will have to increase the size of its trophy room. But, this time the honors go to Mrs. Douglas. Anne, (Mrs, Kirk Douglas) will receive the “Woman Of The Year” award by Friendly House, the Oldest Woman’s Recovery Program in the U.S. on Oct.20 at the Beverly Hilton.
The organization has successfully treated over 6500 women recovering from the diseases of alcoholism and drug addition with a success rate of 72%, compared, they say, with the hospital average of 35%. Friendly House, celebrating its 56th year helping women in recovery adds its newest residence in West L.A., a donation by William Shatner’s Family Foundation.
Anne Douglas started the Anne Douglas Center for homeless women in downtown L.A. and founded the Anne and Kirk Douglas School Playground Restoration Program. She’s determined to have restored the 400th playground before year’s end.
The number now stands at 372. “I just love doing it,” she says,”– when you see the smiling faces of the children when they can safely play in a new playground.” I’ve been present at the dedication by Anne and Kirk at of one of those playgrounds –she’s right about those “smiling faces.
She’s received awards from Cedars-Sinai Research for Women’s Cancers, the Scopus Award and the U.N.Ralph Bunche award and is also President of Kirk Douglas’ Bryna Co.
