“You’re the whole reason we’re here,” Marlo Thomas said to the handsome eight-year-old boy and beautiful three-year-old girl sitting with us at Variety’s Power of Youth event on Saturday afternoon at Universal Hollywood. “Your hair has grown back magnificently,” Marlo complimented them. They had both been patients at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and had undergone surgeries — “and will be going back for checkups,” a mother reminded me. Later Marlo and brother Tony Thomas brought on stage at the SRO Old Globe Theater, a further group of parents and their children who had similar success stories to tell. It was standing ovation time — and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Variety’s Publisher Charlie Koones told the young Hollywood audience what the event stands for, reportedly $200,000 had been raised today and Associate Publisher Brian Gott reminded that the online auction continues through Oct. 19 on Variety.com.
