Who better? Bob Hope will receive the inaugural presentation of the “American Patriot Award” from the USS Midway Museum in San Diego on May 26. He entertained troops on the Midway in 1972 at Singapore harbor and in 1987 in the North Arabian Sea.
He received the Congressional Gold Medal as “America’s most-prized ambassador of goodwill throughout the world” and was made an “honorary veteran” in 1997 by an act of Congress. Hope allowed, “I’ve been given many awards in my lifetime but to be numbered among the men and women I admire most is the greatest honor I have ever received.” He died in 2003 at the age of 100. Wife Dolores, who will be 98 May 27, hopefully will attend with son Kelly. The event is to be m.c’d by Ed McMahon and former San Diego Charger and NBC sportscaster Jim Laslavic.
