“I’m lucky all my life,” Eartha Kitt modestly told me (on the phone). “Luck” can hafrdly be the reason for successes continuing as she celebrates her 80th birthday this year. Next Tuesday (Sept.18) she makes a return to the Cafe Carlyle and on the following night at the Hotel Carlyle she is toasted by beauty editors celebrating the launch of MAC cosmetics’ “SMOKE SIGNALS.” Eartha Kitt is the inspiration for it–at the age of 80! She tells me, “It is wonderful MAC has done this for people of my complexion.” To toast the new honor, Eartha tells me she will sing “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” regularly in her show–as she does on the MAC video. She reminds me, “It is one of the best songs–as well as being one of the most difficult–because its range.” She sang a few bars of it to me proving her point. Eartha will hold forth at the Cafe Carlyle through Oct.27. What’s next? “Theater–I’m working on my one-woman show and having meetings on it now.” Stay tuned for Eartha Kitt in her 81st year.
