John Wayne and Barbara Stanwyck will receive gala tributes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science on the 100th anniversary of their respective birthdays this year. Wayne will be toasted May 24 (his real birthday is on May 26) and Stanwyck on May 16 (her birthday is on July 16).
Stanwyck was nominated four times for Best Actress: “Stella Dallas” (1938), “Ball of Fire” (1942), “Double Indemnity” (1945), “Sorry Wrong Number” (1949). She didn’t win for any of them, but received an honorary Oscar in 1982. Wayne received his Best Actor Oscar for “True Grit” (1970) and was nominated for “Sands of Iwo Jima” (1950), also as producer of the Best Picture nominee, “The Alamo,” in 1961.
