Whoopi in talks to join ‘View’

Sherri Shepherd may also come to ABC show

ABC is in final negotiations with frequent guest host Whoopi Goldberg to join “The View.”

“We have no closed deal,” said ABC Daytime prexy Brian Frons, but Frons has indicated that he thinks she was “terrific” during her stint as guest host.

ABC is also reportedly in talks with Sherri Shepherd to join the show. Shepherd’s a standup comic who has appeared in series such as “Less than Perfect.”

ABC is searching for a replacement for Rosie O’Donnell, who left the show in May, and whose boisterous and controversial presence resurrected ratings for the 10-year-old chatfest.

Sources said an announcement on both signings could come as soon as next week.

ABC is looking to fill two chairs on “The View” after the departure of O’Donnell. The net never filled the spot once held by Star Jones Reynolds, who was fired from the show in 2006.

Former moderator Meredith Viera left “The View” in 2006 to co-anchor NBC’s “Today.”

Co-creator Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Elizabeth Hasselbeck are the only permanent hosts for the show.

Producer Bill Geddie has tried to add an African-American voice to the show, and also experimented with several male hosts, including Mario Cantone and Ross Mathews.
