‘Top Gear’ to get Aussie makeover

Freehand Prods. will produce eight episodes

SYDNEY — Aussie pubcaster SBS has become the first web outside Blighty to produce a local version of the BBC’s long-running car-review skein “Top Gear.”

Freehand Prods., BBC Worldwide’s partner Down Under, will produce eight episodes for SBS to screen next year.

Skein has been a huge success for the BBC, screening in 100 territories. The original “Top Gear” has screened on SBS since 2005, and the pubcaster has also renewed its deal to run the U.K. series.
