SVT wins rights to HBO shows

TV unit to get access to new series

Swedish Television has won a bidding war for free-to-air rights to HBO content for the next three years.

The new deal, for an undisclosed sum, goes into effect immediately. SVT will get access to series that are produced or broadcast during 2007, including the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks-produced “The Pacific,” Alan Ball’s “True Blood” and the miniseries “Generation Kill” with Swede Alexander Skarsgard in one of the leading roles.

SVT has previously broadcast HBO series “The Sopranos” and “Six Feet Under,” while rival TV4 had the rights to “Deadwood,” and Channel 5 aired “Rome” and “Big Love.”

Canal Plus Sweden has cable rights to HBO output.
